90's Hawks Uniforms and NFL Referees Making Comebacks

September 27, 2012

According to Chris Creamer over at www.sportslogos.net, the Atlanta Hawks will harken back to the 90’s with a “Hardwood Classic” jersey in 2012-2013. Remember those hawks. The Mookie Blaylock, Steve Smith, Dikembe Mutombu Hawks who wore the black and red color scheme with yellow trim. The jerseys were emblazoned with a hawk with spread wings in the center of the jersey clutching a basketball in its talons. While the Hawks will continue to wear their current jerseys, as this blast from the past cannot even be considered an alternative look. Most likely the retro look will come out once or twice during the season, but no more than that. This past offseason, the Hawks traded star Joe Johnson to the Brooklyn Nets, allowing them to clear large amounts of cap space, but instilling little faith in their fans as to their chances of winning in the next few seasons.

In other news, the NFL and the Referees union finally figured things out and have tentatively agreed to a deal that would allow the referees to officiate games beginning tonight with the Ravens and the Browns. I think I speak for everyone at PLA in saying, thank you NFL owners for finally paying the refs and getting them back doing what they do best.

Authentic Store Buzz:  Remember folks, Pro League Authentics has all of your Eagles gear. With a good selection of hats and jerseys online and an even greater selection of great shirts by Junkfood Tees in store, PLA has what ever Eagles fan needs come Sunday.

In addition, with the Washington Nationals clinching a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history since the 1980's, and the San Francisco Giants claimed the top spot on the NL West for the 2nd time in the last three seasons.  PLA continues to offer 25% off on all MLB jerseys, just use the code "MLB" when purchasing.

Authentically Speaking Trivia Time: In what year did the LA Angels stop wearing pinstriped uniforms? Answer Tomorrow.

Tuesday’s answer:  The Packers used the same colors as Notre Dame while the Bears took the same colors as the University of Illinois, except the blue the Bears used was a darker shade.

Whose Jersey Do You Have?

September 26, 2012

Tomorrow night when the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens get together to play some good ol’ backyard football, it will mark the beginning of week 4 in the NFL. While much of the recent discussion of the game has centered on the referees, what about the jerseys the fans are wearing to the games? Despite the appalling calls and non-calls made by these replacement officials, NFL fans continue to watch games on television, and buy tickets to attend NFL games. But, whose jerseys are these fans wearing?

Neither the NFL nor NIKE, the new producer of all NFL jerseys, will comment on jersey sales since April 2012, some information still exists. We know that Nike bottom line has done well since they introduced the New Nike NFL jerseys, and according to an article in Forbes, the new jerseys have had an affect on recent economic growth in the U.S. According to the NFLSHOP.com, here is the top ten list of jerseys sold.

1.     Peyton Manning

2.     Robert Griffin III

3.     Tim Tebow

4.     Andrew Luck

5.     Eli Manning

6.     Aaron Rodgers

7.     Patrick Willis

8.     Tom Brady

9.     Cam Newton

10.  Troy Polamalu

Interestingly, Weld County District 6, a school district in Colorado has banned the wearing of Peyton Manning jerseys by their students, teachers, etc… to school. According to school officials, barring students from wearing the jersey has to do with the number 18, no the fact that it is a Broncos or Peyton Manning jersey. Were a student to wear a number 18 Colts jersey to school it would be confiscated as well. It has to do with gang numbers. The numbers officially banned by Weld County District 6 include 13,14,18, 31, 41, and 81.

One interesting note about the top 10 list, Andrew Luck and two defensive players appear on the list before on running back. This probably has to do with the relative ease with which running backs get injured and thus no longer play for their teams. Everyone wants his or her jerseys to last.

Quinn vs. Root in Game 4 Tilt

September 25, 2012

The question often comes up: how old is A’s pitcher Jack Quinn? Nobody knows for sure. He refuses to give his birthday, or even his birthplace. “I’ll tell my age when I quit,” he told one sportswriter. Most folks believe it was 1883. As for his heritage? Not sure there either. Some say Russian, others […]

The Little Guy Counts Too

September 25, 2012

Athlete endorsement deals are to sports apparel companies as gold was to the California gold rush minors. Players like Larry Fitzgerald and Darrelle Revis have deals with Dick’s Sporting Goods, while Robert Griffin III has a deal with Adidas. Dick’s Sporting Goods and Adidas are huge companies who can gain player’s endorsements with ease, as it all leads back to sales.

Have you ever heard of KOAR Performance? Well, they peddle sports apparel that, using proprietary technology that has been tested, reduces blood lactate and increases maximum oxygen consumption. Overall, it is supposed to aid in performance. Because the company is not that well known, they approached a lesser-known NFL player to endorse their products. Overall, this is a smart move, and if the company takes off, Donald Brown of the Indianapolis Colts will benefit from KOAR’s success. Brown was the star running back at UCONN and currently starts at tailback for the Colts. Brown won’t just put his name and face on these products, he will also give instructional tips to through the KOAR website on training and in-game performance.

It is always important to look at the big guys like Dicks, Adidas, and Under Armour, but just as important to find solid products from companies like KOAR.

Alternative Sundays

September 24, 2012

Cardinal is a shade of red. In fact, the bird the Cardinal is known for its red color. In sports, 2 major sports teams have the name “Cardinals.” The St. Louis Cardinals of baseball and the Arizona Cardinals of football. Baseball fans commonly refer to the St. Louis Cardinals as the Redbirds, a nickname similar to the likes of the Buccos for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Bronx Bombers for the New York Yankees. All signs points towards the color red playing an important role in the Cardinals’ uniforms and overall identity.

While all of this remains true, yesterday, the Arizona Cardinals wore black jerseys at home vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. The NFL states that the alternate uniforms cannot be worn on nationally televised games or after flex scheduling, which starts after the Cardinals bye week. This exchange of colors is similar to the lime green jerseys worn by the Seattle Seahawks. Many teams have introduced alternative jerseys over the last few seasons, many of them deciding on black. The Eagles have worn black, s well as a number of “throwback” uniforms including their kelly green jerseys and yellow and baby blue ones.

Authentically Speaking Trivia Time: Name the two seasons in which the Arizona Diamondbacks changed their uniforms. Answer Tomorrow.

Saturday’s answer:  The name "Nationals" comes from 1905. In that year the Washington Senators had the nickname "Nationals" and decided to change the team name from Senators to Nationals. Newspapers dubbed them the Nats and the word Nationals appeared on their jerseys for two seasons until it was switched back to a "W".

Feeling Chipper This Morning

September 22, 2012

This weekend marks the Braves final visit to Citizens Bank in 2012. Oh, the Bravos will be back in 2013, but for the first time since 1995 Chipper Jones will not make the trip. Jones plans on retiring once the 2012 season ends, ending on of the best careers of all-time. He will retire as the best switch-hitter of all time, and one of the best third baseman ever. Were it not for some injury problems later in his career, Jones would have achieved the 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Jones is a shoe in for the Hall of Fame despite not reaching these two milestones. Every stadium he visits for the last time is special, and marked as thus by the home team. Even in New York, where Jones would torch the Mets over and over again, to the point that which he names a son of his Shea after the Mets former stadium, the fans gave him a standing ovation.

Phillies fans didn’t disappoint, giving Larry “Chipper” Jones an ovation, during a small ceremony in which Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins presented the lifelong Atlanta Brave with a painting of Jones that invoked all sorts of NL East memories.

In othernews, a day before the series began with the Phillies; Braves rookies got together, dressed up in ridiculous costumes, and took some photographs. In typical Chipper Jones style, knowing he’ll never get this chance again, Jones joined the Braves neophytes. He sported gold chains and what looks like a red smoking jacket.

Authentic Store Buzz:  Remember folks, Pro League Authentics has all of your Eagles gear. With a good selection of hats and jerseys online and an even greater selection of great shirts by Junkfood Tees in store, PLA has what ever Eagles fan needs come Sunday.

With the team off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2004 Super Bowl appearance season, there’s obviously plenty of enthusiasm among fans who have been flocking into the store. The Eagles play the Cardinals this Sunday at 4:05pm EST

In addition, with the Washington Nationals clinching a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history since the 1980's, and the Cincinnati Reds breaking through to the playoffs for the third time since 1990, PLA continues to offer 25% off on all MLB jerseys.

Authentically Speaking Trivia Time: Where does the name Washington Nationals come from? Answer on Monday.

Friday’s answer:  While in Philadelphia, NY Giants Manager John McGraw said the Ben Shibe, owner of the A's, had a "white elephant" on his hands. Connie Mack, A's manager, then presented McGraw, a friend of his, with a white elephant at the beginning of the 1905 World Series. The Elephant was adopted as the mascot of the A's, and over the next 100 years retired and brought back. The A's batting practice hats have an elephant on them.
