Terry Tosses a No-No

August 15, 2013

1990 had not been a particularly memorable year for Terry Mulholland. He was 6-6 with a 4.34 ERA on the season, and as he took the Vet Stadium mound on August 15th against a Giants team led by Will Clark and Matt Williams,  he didn’t feel particularly great. “It wasn’t a great warmup,” Mulholland said. “I […]

The Disastrous Pat Gillick Trade That Still Haunts the Phils

July 27, 2013

Pat Gillick is a hero in this town because they won a title under his watch. But it is certainly worth noting that the vast majority of that team was signed by Ed Wade. The only major players on that team brought in by Gillick were Jamie Moyer, Jayson Werth, and Brad Lidge (well, unless […]

When the Phils Traded Grover Cleveland Alexander for Pickles

July 27, 2013

With the trade deadline coming up (and the Phils hopefully selling), I thought we’d look at a few terrible trades in team history. I’ve already covered a few, but I’m gonna cover a couple more and then make a list of the worst five trades in Phils history. It’s just incredible how many times the […]

Five Forgotten Phillies All-Stars

July 16, 2013

DICK BARTELL (SS-1933). Tremendously underrated shortstop of the 1930s, “Rowdy Richard” Bartell is ranked the 38th best shortstop in baseball history by thebaseballpage.com, and yet I have barely heard of him (though he is involved in one of my favorite photos in baseball history). He and Chuck Klein were the only two Phillies to play in […]

Five Steals in a Game? Eh, No Biggie. One Phillie Stole Seven

May 31, 2013

Jacoby Ellsbury made an ass out of the Phillies last night, swiping five bags, and in the process setting a team record. It was also the most the Phillies have ever given up to one player in a game. But there is a Phillie who has done even better, and a member of the Philadelphia […]

All Philly No-Hitters Broken Up With 2 Outs in the 9th

April 04, 2013

With Yu Darvish having his no-hitter broken up with two outs in the 9th (AGAIN!), I thought we’d take a look at all no-hitters broken up with 2 outs in the 9th involving Philly teams. We’ll start with games that Phillies and A’s pitchers lost no-nos in the 9th, then later we’ll look at games in […]

LaSalle’s 1954 Title Team

March 21, 2013

There was no question who the star of LaSalle’s 1954 championship team was. It was #15 Tom Gola, the 6’7″ junior forward who was more or less the original Magic Johnson, a player who would be at center court for jump ball and then moments later be bringing the ball up the court as point […]

Behind the Scenes of the Worst Trade in Phillies History, and How Larry Bowa Got Back at the Phils

January 27, 2013

In 1980, the fiery Dallas Green led the Philadelphia Phillies to their first ever World Series title. Just over a year later, Green was taken from the Phils, as the Chicago Cubs hired him to be their GM. He immediately went to work, firing Chicago fan favorites and bringing in Phillies players such as Keith […]

Eagles Coach You Should Know: Jim Trimble, the Co-Creator of the Modern Goal Post

January 22, 2013

In 1951, the Eagles hired Bo McMillan to be their head coach, and McMillan hired an assistant named Jim Trimble to help him out. But two games into the 1951 season, McMillan was diagnosed with stomach cancer and had to step down. He handed the reins over to  Wayne Millner. Millner coached the 1951 team […]

Something's Afoot

January 16, 2013

The Sacramento Kings are in a bit of trouble. Owners, the Maloof brothers, have considered moving the team, and now it seems they are willing to sell the Kings. After possibly moving the Kings to Anaheim in 2011, the Maloof brothers are now rumored to be in discussions with a group of investors from Seattle to sell the franchise from California’s capitol city and have it moved north to the Emerald City.

The city of Seattle has already approved a deal for a new arena, so the Seattle seems to be willing to welcome back an NBA franchise back after losing the Seattle Supersonics to Oklahoma City. If the Kings move to Seattle, will the team retain the name “Kings” return to the name “Supersonics”, or take on a completely new name? That question remains to be seen, but the Atlanta Thrashers recently moved from Atlanta to Winnipeg and instead of retaining the name Thrashers, the franchise took on the name of the most recent NHL franchise in Winnipeg, the Jets. No matter what happens, the people of Seattle should be very excited about a return of the NBA.

Where Do We Send This Stuff?

January 09, 2013

As many of you may know, when two teams play for a championship, both teams have merchandise celebrating their victory made up before the game is even played. When one team wins, in this case the University of Alabama, they don their championship hats, shirts, etc… right after the clock hits 00:00, while the losing team, in this case Notre Dame, ends up sending their stock of merchandise to children in Africa in need of clothing. In this case, the Alabama Crimson Tide demolished the Fighting Irish, making this phantom championship gear all the more hilarious for fans of Bama’ and all the more depressing for the fans of the Irish. While these situations pop up every time a team loses a major sports championship. At least the kids in Africa benefit because the Irish aren’t excited about seeing this merchandise.
