Though he had been a very effective pitcher for the Red Sox in the early 1920s, by 1929 he had run out of steam, and Connie Mack was […]

How to Get Noticed By a Top Basketball Coach

February 11, 2014

No matter how good you are at playing basketball, if you're hoping to win a scholarship to play for one of the top college teams, you'll need to make sure that you put in the amount of work needed to get noticed by scouts and coaches. It's important to understand that even really great players can get overlooked, and it’s vital for you to be proactive in putting yourself out there and making sure that you stand out for all of the right reasons. If you're currently working towards getting a basketball scholarship, we've got some tips to help you make sure you grab the attention of college coaches.

Being Proactive

When it comes to getting an athletic scholarship, you really can't simply hope that you get one. Scholarship places are often very competitive, and you’ll need to be prepared to contact coaches, enter competitions, use social media, and more in order to ensure that you don’t end up overlooked. Many coaches will only consider awarding scholarships to players who are intuitive and get in touch to showcase their skills. Signing up to a site such as Athletes-USA.com is a great way of putting your skills out there and getting noticed.

Create a Sports Video

Showcasing your skills on video can be a great way to get coaches to stand up and take notice of you when playing basketball. Since many coaches cannot often make it to the games that you invite them to in order to see you in action, especially if you’re applying to a college a long way from home, sending them a video can be a great alternative way to ensure that they see you in action before considering whether or not you deserve a place. Since many school basketball games will be recorded, you may already have some great footage that you could use.

Improve Your Skills

When looking for new recruits, college coaches aren’t just looking for a good already developed set of skills, they also want to see players who are dedicated to constantly improving and fine tuning their basketball skills and techniques. With many college coaches, it’s the attitude of the player that they are really interested in getting to know more about. With the right attitude towards practice, learning and improvement within your sport, you will become more of an attractive candidate to professional coaches.

Compete Often

Aiming to compete in as many basketball competitions as you can is essential if you're trying to get noticed by a coach or scout for a top college team. Not only does regularly competing help to improve your skills and performance, it's also the best way to put your skills out there. Along with competing, there are plenty of other ways that you could get relevant experience, such as coaching younger players in your spare time.

Getting sports scholarships in basketball is very competitive, so if you're hoping to be awarded a place playing basketball for a top college team, it's important to make sure that you'll be noticed.

Eagles vs the Saints in the Wild Card…in 1993

January 01, 2014

Heading into the 4th quarter of the January 3rd, 1993 NFC Wild Card game between the Saints and Eagles, things were looking dim for the visiting Birds. The offense had sputtered for three quarters, and the Birds trailed the Saints, 20-10. Worse yet, the Saints D was the best in the NFL, surrendering a measly […]

2014 MLB Batting Practice Jersey designs released

October 04, 2013

Every three years, Major League Baseball teams get their batting practice jerseys redesigned.  The changes aren't huge - the colors and logo generally remain the same - but fans now can look forward to a new style coming next season.

Paul Lukas, the uniform wizard over at ESPN's UniWatch, brings us photos of these new batting practice jerseys.

Some more observations from Paul:

  •  Seven teams -- the Braves, Indians, Rockies, Royals, Marlins, Rays and Nationals -- are going with two-tone designs, with one color on the front of the jersey and a different color on the back.

  • Five teams are going with separate home and road jerseys: the Red Sox, Reds, Twins, Yankees and Padres. In addition, the Brewers have a separate throwback design.
  • The Indians' jersey features the team's block-"C" logo -- the latest example of the club distancing itself from its Chief Wahoo logo, which is apparently being eased into semi-retirement.
  • The Pirates' design features black lettering on a black background, similar to the NBA's "Big Color" jerseys from last Christmas.
  • The Astros' design includes tequila sunrise side panels, just like their 2013 BP jersey.

  • The Yankees, obviously, don't put names on the back of their BP jerseys. But it's interesting to see that nine of the other 29 teams are also going nameless. This is understandable during spring training, when rosters are huge and it can be a hassle to add lettering to dozens of players' jerseys. But it's surprising that so many teams would stick with the nameless format during the regular season, especially because the whole point of BP jerseys is to move merchandise.

NBA may allow nicknames on the back of jerseys

September 26, 2013

The NBA is considering allowing players to wear jerseys featuring their nicknames instead of last names.  However, this would only be for one game next season and it would only involve the champion Miami Heat and fashionable Brooklyn Nets.  Players on the two teams have already been asked to submit potential nicknames for their jerseys.

As we all know, one of the main reasons of having a player's name on a jersey is to highlight the athlete and his or her brand as opposed to just the team.  On the other hand, some college teams like to go with no names on the jersey to promote team unity. Notably Penn State Football shed this tradition with the hiring of Bill O'Brien.  The focus on the player brand is certainly a trend in sports, exacerbated by social media's ability to let players connect directly with their fans.
