The Biggest Upsets in Round One and Best Games in Round Two of Philly’s Most Infuriating

March 17, 2012

What an opening week! (see the updated brackets here.) We see all of our #1 and #2 seeds advance, but after that it was wide open. Three number #3s (Lindros, Schmidt, and Mitch) go down to #14 seeds, and two #4 seeds (Dick Allen and Bobby Clarke-GM) go down to #13 seeds. We have two […]

Most Underrated Philly Athletes of All-Time: #11 Brad McCrimmon

March 16, 2012

Brad McCrimmon was the kind of player that every coach would love to have.  The 5’11” defenseman combined exceptional positioning with hard-nosed play.  “Beast” did all the workman-type, little things that need to be done for a team to be successful, but also contributed offensively when called upon. He sits at #11 on our list […]

Philly’s Most Infuriating Brackets are Underway!

March 13, 2012

TO. Kobe. Toast. Eskin. Over the years, there have been plenty of players and sports personalities to come through this town that drove the local populace crazy. Well we’ve assembled them all, and they’re going head to head in a tournament that will determine the title of “Philly’s Most Hated”. The voting has already begun […]

#12 Most Underrated Athlete in Philly Sports History: Freddy Leach

March 07, 2012

Your first reaction to this was probably a lot like mine: who in the hell is Fred Leach? An online search turns up a wiki page that is a full two sentences long. His facebook page has all of two likes. Well I guess that’s why Art though he should make the list. After all, […]

Wilt Scores 100 in Hershey As Warriors Knock Off Knicks!

March 03, 2012

I had so much fun with the 1911 A’s that I thought I’d do something similar for Wilt’s 100 point game. So I went to the library and looked at the Inquirer and Bulletin from the days immediately before and after Wilt’s 100 point game. The NBA was so bush league back then that there […]

Papelbon debuts in road gray at Pittsburgh

February 10, 2012

The Phillies opened the 2012 season on the road yesterday. Jonathan Papelbon made his regular season Phillies debut in the road gray jersey.

On Opening Day, the road jersey is unadorned - no anniversary or memorial patches. In 2011, the Phillies wore a B-patch on their jerseys to memoralize minority owners who had passed away during the offseason. In 2010, Robin Roberts passed away on May 6 and the Phillies added a #36 memorial patch to their unis to honor the Hall of Famer. This is the first time since April 2010 that the Phils are wearing the unadorned road grays.

Purchase your Phillies #58 Papelbon authentic jersey at PLA here!

#13 Most Underrated Philly Athlete of All Time: Von Hayes

February 03, 2012

(6 points) You know who Von Hayes reminds me a lot of? Andre Iguodala. He does a lot of things well but nothing great, the team overvalued his talents, and he’s never compared against other players but against his own expectations. That said, one day I think we’ll look back and say that Iguodala is […]

Most Underrated Philly Athletes of All-Time: #14 John LeClair

February 01, 2012

(6 points) American-born NHL star John LeClair sits at No. 14 on our list of the most underrated athletes in Philadelphia sports history.  His career spanned 16 seasons, 10 of which were spent wearing the Orange and Black (’94-95 to ’03-’04).  There’s no denying the fact that John LeClair was one of the best scorers […]

Most Underrated Philly Athletes of All-Time: #15 Byron Evans

January 31, 2012

(6 points) Just how underrated is Byron Evans? His wikipedia entry contains exactly 2 sentences about his career with the Eagles, and one of those talks about how he was overlooked as a defender. But his value is best summed up in this article by Reuben Frank last year about (what else?) how underrated Byron […]

The 15 Most Underrated Philly Athletes of All-Time

January 31, 2012

A few parameters before we kick this thing off. First of all, these are 15 athletes we think are underrated by fans of Philadelphia. Not nationally. There are a couple who might even be overrated nationally, but locally don’t get the love they deserve. As far as how we scored it…we took each person who […]

Andy Musser Dies

January 24, 2012

On Sunday, at the age of 74, former Philadelphia sports broadcaster Andy Musser passed away in his Wynnewood home.  Over the course of his career, Musser called games for the Eagles, Sixers and Villanova basketball, but his work in the broadcast booth for the Phillies defined his time in Philadelphia.  From 1976 to 2001, Musser […]
