Meet the Shibe Crew: Darren Nowicki

May 04, 2020

Darren joined the Shibe team as store manager in early 2019. He had a wealth of restaurant and theatre management experience but none in retail. It was a risk bringing in someone who had to learn so much on the fly, but the transition was seamless. He's been a terrific addition to the team, and we're thrilled to have him on board...even if he's a Detroit Tigers fan.

We asked each member of the team ten questions, as well as what their favorite Shibe products are. Here are Darren's answers.

If you played in the MLB, what would your at-bat music be? (song and artist)
Mannish Boy by Muddy Waters

If you hosted a late night talk show host, what person (living or dead) would you most want to interview?
Jackie Robinson. If he was busy, I would have James Brown as back up.

What's your favorite sports memory?
I grew up in metro-Detroit and was a big University of Michigan fan. I will always cherish the memory of my high school friends and I glued to the television in my parents basement watching as Rumeal Robinson sank 2 free throws with 3 seconds remaining in the 1989 NCAA men's basketball championship to defeat Seton Hall. Chaos ensued!

What is your karaoke song?
Karaoke should be a capital crime, punishable by death.

If you could play any sport professionally, what would it be?
No doubt about it - GOLF! You can play well into your golden years, travel the world, walk some of the most beautiful pieces of land anywhere and get paid big bucks even if you don't win!

What's your favorite sports book?
Three Nights in August: Strategy, Heartbreak, and Joy by Tony La Russa Chronicles a 3 game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and arch-rival Chicago Cubs.

What's your favorite place you've ever travelled?
As a college kid traveling Europe in the mid 90s, Amsterdam had it all. Aside from the obvious, the city has incredible beauty, canals, parks, museums and an energy and spirit that still inspires to this day.

Who is your favorite all-time Philly athlete?
Placido Polanco Between 2002 - 2013, Polanco played either for the Phillies or my hometown team, the Detroit Tigers. He wasn't a flashy player or Hall of Famer by any stretch. What he was was a solid, reliable, multi-position player with a good eye, disciplined hitter, excellent fielder and a great teammate/clubhouse guy.

If budget was no object, what artist/group would you want to sing at your birthday party?
Rolling Stones circa 1976

Where is your favorite place in the area to watch the big game?
Cherry Street Tavern - longtime neighborhood tavern in the Fairmount/Art Museum area.

What are your 3 favorite products?
Philadelphia A's Elephant Hat. There is such a great story behind why the A's wore a white elephant on their uniform. The iconic symbol, born out of the legendary A's manager Connie Mack's response to NY Giants manager John McGraw's comment has survived over 100 years and 3 teams, coast-to-coast. I love sharing the story with Shibe customers and hearing their memories.

Steagles Shirt. A fascinating scenario in sport history with 2 storied franchises combining player rosters and coaching staffs in order to field a team during the labor shortage during World War II. There are also many 'divided" households in PA with Eagles and Steelers fans which makes this shirt additionally awesome.

Spectrum Shirt. Spectrum memories - good, bad, & heartbreaking - are countless for Philly fans. Add in the memories of the many live music concerts and you have one of the most hallowed spaces in Philadelphia lore.
