Triple Figure Threat

October 05, 2012

The Major League Baseball season ended October 3rd. It was on this day that Tigers 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera retained his lead in three offensive categories, batting average, runs batted in, and home runs. No player has led his respective league in those three categories since 1967 when the Boston Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski did it. By leading the league in RBI, HR, and batting average Cabrera secured himself the Triple Crown. Because few men have achieved this feat and, especially since it has not been done in 45 years, Major League Baseball is attempting to capitalize on this accomplishment. MLB.com is currently selling dirt from the batter’s box he stood in Kaufman Memorial Stadium, the site of the game played between the Tigers and the Royals on Tuesday night. They are selling it in a clear case that is made into a plaque that has Cabrera’s statistics proving he wont the Triple Crown. The league’s price tag: $49.99.

Many think that this individual accomplishment may help Cabrera financially, but also think it won’t be a huge boost given that Cabrera’s first language is Spanish and he played in Detroit, not a huge market like Chicago, Boston, New York, or Los Angeles.

Authentic Store Buzz: Last night, Pro League Authentics held the Left Field Cards event. Artist Amelie Mancini brought her prints from Brooklyn to Philadelphia for a night, showing off her new presidential collection. He baseball oriented artistic prints are incredibly creative. Her collections include Bizzarre injuries, Edible All-Stars, and Marvelous Mustaches. Now she adds the presidential series to the bunch. The event was a great success. In addition, Ms. Mancini created an exclusive Greg Luzinski print just for the event.

The Major League Baseball regular season is over, but that means the playoffs are just starting. With two Wild Card one-game playoff games going on October 5th, the baseball playoff setting couldn't get much better. The Braves play the Cardinals in Atlanta and the Orioles play the Rangers in Arlington. Only thing left to do is watch what happens. To help you support your favorite team fighting to make the playoffs, PLA continues to offer 25% off on all MLB jerseys, just use the code "MLB" when purchasing.

Authentically Speaking Trivia Time:  Jimmie Foxx managed one baseball team following his MLB playing career. What team did he manage, and in what year did he manage that team? Answer to come tomorrow.

Wednesday’s answer:  Ted Williams(2x) Lou Gehrig, Chuck Klein won the Triple Crown award but not their league's MVP award. Those winners before 1931 were not eligable for the MVP because the award was not yet given out.
