The Major League Baseball season ended October 3rd. It was on this day that Tigers 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera retained his lead in three offensive categories, batting average, runs batted in, and home runs. No player has led his respective league in those three categories since 1967 when the Boston Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski did it. By leading the league in RBI, HR, and batting average Cabrera secured himself the Triple Crown. Because few men have achieved this feat and, especially since it has not been done in 45 years, Major League Baseball is attempting to capitalize on this accomplishment. MLB.com is currently selling dirt from the batter’s box he stood in Kaufman Memorial Stadium, the site of the game played between the Tigers and the Royals on Tuesday night. They are selling it in a clear case that is made into a plaque that has Cabrera’s statistics proving he wont the Triple Crown. The league’s price tag: $49.99.
Many think that this individual accomplishment may help Cabrera financially, but also think it won’t be a huge boost given that Cabrera’s first language is Spanish and he played in Detroit, not a huge market like Chicago, Boston, New York, or Los Angeles.
