At the end of June the Major League Baseball standings looked like this: The Yankees, White Sox, and Rangers led their respective American League divisions, the LA Angels and Baltimore Orioles held the Wild Card spots with the Boston Red Sox only one and a half games out. The Nationals, Giants, and Reds had leads in their respective National League divisions, but the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers held the Wild Card spots with the Mets only one game back.
Switch to today, the day after the last game of the regular season. The Yankees, Tigers, and Athletics won the three AL divisions with the Rangers and Orioles winning the Wild Card spots. In the NL, the Nats, Reds, and Giants retained their leads on their divisions, winning them outright, but the Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals won the two wild card slots.
