One of the Phillies biggest fans passed away recently. Hattie Gubel, who was born not far from Shibe Park, died at age 96. Two years ago, she attended a Phillies World Series game in Tampa, and in 2009 she went to Wrigley to watch the Phils play the Cubs to celebrate her 95th birthday. It was somewhat ironic, as Hattie was born in the same year that Wrigley opened. Here’s a fun video commemorating her trip to the Windy City. While on the trip, she got to meet her crush, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. According to her obituary on philly.com (Bachove is her great-nephew):
In 2009, for her 95th birthday, Hattie got to meet her heartthrob – manager Charlie Manuel – whose photo she kept in her wallet and by her bedside.
“She really liked men and she really liked Charlie,” Bachove said. “She was kind of a flirt.”
Hattie was laid to rest with a Phillies shirt and hat on. RIP Hattie.
