The following poem was written in the Philadelphia Inquirer by Myles Pickering, in honor of Howard Ehmke’s brilliant Game 1 victory.The pic above is of Ehmke.
As through a field of wheat the moving scythe makes stubs
Of what was once an army trim and straight.
So Ehmke, with his mighty arm, mowed down the Cubs,
To take his place among the baseball great.
Not young in years, but in his heart youth’s fire glowed,
And warmed each muscle and each tensing nerve;
Dropped from his shoulders all the years, while Fate bestowed
On him laurels only great deserve.
