Book Signing with Hall of Fame Journalist Ray Didinger

January 16, 2015 1 Comment

Ray Didinger at Shibe Vintage SportsHall of Fame journalist Ray Didinger will be at Shibe Vintage Sports on Saturday, January 24th from 5-7pm to talk about Eagles teams past and present, and sign copies of his new book, The New Eagles Encyclopedia.

This is going to be a great opportunity to hang out with one of the greatest sportswriters in Philadelphia history, and ask him questions about the upcoming Super Bowl, the Eagles off-season, and about his memories of Eagles teams of the past. The event is free, liquid refreshment and light snacks will be provided free of charge, and Ray will have copies of his new book for sale.

We'll also be unveiling the first in our upcoming series of shirts, the Stadium Series, in which local artist Jon Billet will be doing designs of each of Philadelphia's most historic sports venues.

Dear Ray,
I am 79 years old. When Iwas 6 or 7, my father took me to an Eagles game at Shieb Park, thenat 20th and Leigh. I was seven years old and saw Pete Pihos get hit in the middle of the field and do a flip in the air and run for a touchdown. I was a Pete Pihos and Eagles fan for the rest of my life. I precede you in rooting for Tommy McDonald, Norm Van Brooklyn, Pelligrini and later Jergeson. “Jergeson to McDonnel wasthe expression, butVan Broklun was the guy! Back then, I was in the company of Pelligrini, Beiskiand Walston at a Sunday dinner at my uncles house. My memory of that day were many, but Most impressive, was the size of Pelligrenni’s thighs…they were bigger than my waiste. Another story, my suits and another hero of mine, a two way player, ChickBednerick. Anyway,I have many experiences with, my first love, the Philadelphia Eagles, aka, the Yellow Jackets. Back to when I was seven. During that game when Jsaw Pete Pihos flip and run for a touchdown, the guy beside me was smoking a cigar. Fromthat point on I was addicted to the Eagles and cigars. Do not let anyone tell you your experiences as a youth do affect the rest of your life. This season has been difficult to endure, understand, or make sense out of. Personally, I have a feeling that Wentz will never, like Dan Marino, never win a Super Bowl. He has got all the qualities except, in my opinion, passing accuracy. By that, I mean, ability to hit receivers in short padding situations in stride and a touch for the long pass. Personally, I donot think the aeagles will win a Super Bowl in the near foreseeable future.
Ray, I love what you do. Ypuare the voice of reason.
Keep the faith.
Our game this Sunday against The Giantswill be telling! We shall see!

A Great Story About Buck O'Neil

August 13, 2020

We learn about Buck O'Neil's story from believing he would be selected to the Hall of Fame to being informed he was not selected. We hear how humble of a man Buck O'Neil was and instead of being negative about not being selected to the Hall of Fame he was proud of the 17 players that were chosen and sang their praises.

Remembering Veterans Stadium

June 19, 2020

Veterans Stadium was built in 1970 on Broad and Pattison to replace the nearly 60-year-old Connie Mack Stadium (originally Shibe Park). The new, state-of-the-art arena boasted the world’s most expensive scoreboard ($3 million) and would be the first outdoor venue in Philadelphia specifically designed to host two professional sports teams.  The Phillies and Eagles called the Vet home from 1971-2003.

American Needle Fitted Hats

If you do not know your size, first determine where on your head you want to wear your hat. Usually it is worn about a half-inch to an inch above the eyebrows and/or just above the ears. Have a friend hold the tape measure (cloth, plastic, or download a printable version here) at the point where you want the hat to rest on your head.  Insert the tip of your little finger between the tape and your head.  Record the measurement and find your Fitted Hat size using the chart below.  This should provide you with a comfortable fit.

Apparel Sizing Tips:

Use these tips as a general guide when finding your measurements:

Chest/Bust: With your arms at your sides, measure around the fullest part of your chest, across shoulder blades and under arms.

Waist: To measure your natural waistline, wrap the tape so it intersects your navel. Keep tape flat, but comfortably loose.

Hips: Stand with your heels together and measure the fullest part of your hips. Make sure the measuring tape is level all the way around your body.

Inseam: Stand up straight, and start the tape measure high in your crotch. Straighten the tape down the inside of your leg to the bottom of your ankle.
