World Hockey Association

The World Hockey Association was a professional ice hockey league that existed in North America from 1972 to 1979. It was the first major league to attempt to compete with the National Hockey League since the collapse of the Western Hockey League in 1926. In fact, many NHL and European players jumped to the WHA, like forward Bobby Hull, who signed a ten-year, $2.75 million contract. Teams included the Los Angeles Sharks, Michigan Stags, Toronto Toros, Philadelphia Blazers and Ottawa Nationals
