Born in North Philadelphia, Freeway started rapping in high school, and soon caught the ear of another local rapper Beanie Sigel. Once Sigel got signed by RocaFella Records he put in a word for Freeway, and after hearing him rap, Jay Z signed him to the label. In 2003, Freeway released his first album Philadelphia Freeway. The album featured the monster hits "What We Do" and "Flipside". The ensuing years were quite busy, as he took a hajj to Mecca and released several albums. But in 2015, he was diagnosed with kidney failure, and was forced to undergo a massive lifestyle change. He received a kidney transplant in 2019, and became an ambassador to the National Kidney Foundation. And even as he battled health problems he continued making music, doing songs with artists such as Lil Wayne, Jadakiss, and Fat Joe.
